When Drakthule returns to find his world in ashes, he does what brilliant, broken men so often do: he wins. Battle after battle. Enemy after enemy. His soldiers love him. His enemies dread him. Alone in the dark between victories, he despises what winning has required.

But vengeance casts a shadow. Somewhere in the same ruined kingdom, a different kind of strength is being forged — older, quieter, guided by an inheritance no army can take and no grief can corrupt.
