Kobe
by Danilo Stern-Sapad
A tribute to Kobe Bryant. One word, every meaning, the sound a shot makes going in, and the sound the world made losing him.
Look… one clock. One body. One run.
Every second already leaving.
Would you watch it?
Or empty the tank?
…He never had to think about it.
Hands numb, lamp hum, late-November weather
Eight years old, bent rim, breath ghostin’ off his sweater
Fingertips stiff, but he grips it, lets the countdown split
The stillness, “Three… two… one” glass shakes, “KOBE!” swish
It drops. No crowd, no camera, just the driveway, just the dark
But he said the name and felt it like somebody struck a spark
Lunch bell. Cards dealt. Eight Jordans face-up
For one rookie Kobe, whole table: “Bad trade. Wake up.”
He said, “Watch,” locked the card in the case, walked away
They were pricing cardboard; he was buying into fate
Before the rings, before the gold, before eighty-one was seen
He knew the name meant somethin’, middle name was Bean
And he lived it in the empty gyms where lights hum overhead
Where the leather cracks the hardwood and the net snaps like a thread
West saw one workout, no banners, no parade
Just a teenager turnin’ every miss into another make
Said the mind-set wasn’t manufactured after fame…
It was already there; the work just taught the world its name
So the scout who drafted legends and the kid beneath that lamp
Saw the same fire at the same time, one saw a prayer, one saw a champ
Took the world two decades just to echo that kid’s call
Card still sealed inside its case. Bent rim still on the wall…
Kobe! (Kobe!) that’s the sound a shot makes goin’ in
Kobe! (Kobe!) that’s the sound the world made losin’ him
One word, every meaning, joy, grief, legend, home
I been shoutin’ it my whole life, I ain’t never shoutin’ alone
Kobe! (Kobe!) one clock, one body, one game
Kobe! (Kobe!) leave it all on the floor; remember the name
Staples, twenty-thirteen, one plant, pop, crowd flinches
Sneakers shriek, trainers sprint, Kobe waves ‘em back: “I’m finishin’.”
Tendon split, face fixed, every step stiff
Drags the leg to the line while the whole place holds its breath
One bounce, knees dip, wrist flick, net whispers
One more, same form, pain burns, no difference
Two makes, then the tunnel; every clap rolls like thunder
Body said the night was over. Work said finish the number
Same hands gave Toronto eighty-one beneath the lights
Then Dallas: sixty-two through three; their whole team: sixty-one
Sat the fourth, scoreboard said enough; the damage had been done
Four straight nights at fifty-plus, traps flashin’, feet slidin’
Hands crowding his sightline, shot clock dying, still rising
First-Team All-D nine times while the scoring load stayed heavy
Guard their sharpest blade, then bring the same legs back for forty
Final game, body drained, but the old fire still with him
Shaq asked him for fifty, Kobe answered him with sixty
Long before the split, when the tension still ran thick
Shaq said “best in the league, by far” and meant every bit
No flowers, no funeral, no memory polished clean
Just pride swallowing pride to say exactly what he’d seen
Oh-eight, MVP, Kobe’s year, crown secured
LeBron was still pursuin’ it, so listen to the words:
“Kobe’s the best player in the NBA”
“And it’s been that way,” he said, “for years and years and years”
Called his skills some of the best the league had ever seen
Later found “zero flaws” inside his offense on the screen
Years passed; grief gave the same respect a darker form:
“We felt like you was immortal” ‘cause he looked it all along
Magic said “the greatest Laker” banners hangin’ right behind him
Wilt and West, Kareem and Magic, feel the weight when he defines him
Then Bird in twenty-twelve made the winning instinct simple:
“If you want to win and win and win, it’s Kobe.” Win. Win. Win.
Every practice, every game, the same intent beneath it:
Walk in looking “to get better”; walk out better than you entered
At the oh-eight All-Star, Bill Russell pulled him close
Said he felt a father’s pride, like Kobe was his own
Years later, Bill wore Kobe’s gold instead of Celtic green
No speech about respect could match what was seen
Beijing gym, rubber screech, whistles split the heat
Bron, Wade, Melo, Dwight, Bosh, Paul, Kidd, stars three rows deep
Twelve alphas, one ball, one gold, one voice cut through the fog:
Coach K looked across the room, called Kobe “the alpha dog”
Two days early, knock at the door: “Their best guard is mine.
I promise I’ll destroy him.” No grin. No wasted line.
First practice, all those scorers, and he doesn’t take a shot
Chest square, feet active: showed ‘em leadership was stops
January twenty-six, twenty-twenty, morning turned mute
Phones glowed in dark bedrooms; nobody believed the news
Courts filled with flowers; eight-second violations passed
Twenty-four seconds standing still while both teams let the clock lapse
LeBron crushed the speech he’d written, let the heart speak instead:
“Mamba out… but in the words of us: not forgotten” head bent
Then that fall, 2.1, A.D. rises, purple seams rotate
Horn sounds, net snaps, read his lips: “KOBE!” sealed the game
Kyrie carried Mamba through the fourth in Game 7 in his mind
Tatum grew beneath that poster, traced the footwork, chased the light
Every paper ball still flies with that same prayer attached
Don’t tell me where he’s gone, tell me where his name ain’t at
Iverson saw him eighteen, go at Mike with no fear
Called him a kindred spirit, knew the killer was there
Said everybody wants the crown, says they’ll sacrifice for it
But not everybody pays what it really takes to earn it
Here’s the part that took me years to understand and get right:
My favorite spent his whole life chasing Mike through film at night
Slow-motion fadeaways, foot placement, shoulder fakes and pivots
Tape hiss, VCR rewinds, dawn leaking through the windows
Took Mike’s moves apart, then rebuilt ‘em for his game
Till the copy had a cadence and the cadence had his name
And Mike knew, cameras rolling, smiled before he told it slowly:
“I don’t think I’d lose one-on-one to anyone… except Kobe.
He steals all of my moves.” Hear the affection in the claim:
Mike saw his own fingerprints, and competition in the frame
We called it cold comparison, kept the ranking war in motion;
We never saw the midnight texts or knew the private devotion
Till the day Mike reached the podium, wiped his face and tried to breathe:
“He was like a little brother” then the room began to grieve
Kobe texted after midnight: post-up angles, feet, progression
Not “Tell me that I’m great” always one more urgent question
Mike’s voice cracked: “This kid had passion like you would never know”
Twenty years, we called it rivalry. There was family we didn’t know
West saw it early; Shaq through the fury; Bron while pursuin’ the crown
Russell spoke like a father, wore gold when the Celtics came round
Magic through banners; Bird through the habits; K with the alphas around
Mike knew the footwork, the fade and the shoulder, the parts he had passed him
Different years, different eras, same answer whenever they asked ‘em
Passion. Practice. Patience. Questions after the session.
Miss it, dissect it, correct it, repeat it till weakness is a weapon
That was the thread through the testimony, deeper than numbers or rings:
Every great who got close saw the work underneath everything
He loved learnin’, that’s the part no highlight reel could show
Trophies gather dust; one question makes the whole game grow
Loss became a lesson, every lesson fed a session
Every session found a weakness, every weakness met correction
Correction into repetition, repetition into instinct…
Till the move no longer looked rehearsed; the body didn’t think
One clock, one body, one run, hear the seconds drum and hum
Knew it at eight, knew it at eighteen, knew it when the tendon ruptured
That’s why “Kobe” still means motion, not nostalgia, not a slogan:
It’s an order yelled before the ball has even left you floating
Same thing told to 15-year-old LeBron across a summer camp:
“You wanna be great? Put the work in, no substitute, no chance”
Same thing told to T-Mac: skip the pickup, build the touch instead
500 to a thousand shots before the gym fills up ahead
Ball drummin’, lungs burnin’, sun comin’, wrist snappin’
Front rim, step in; long, fix it; left, square it; keep trackin’
No crowd clappin’, just shoe traction, breath and backspin
A thousand little answers before anybody walks in
Guard the greatest. Take the hardest. Miss? Remember how it left.
Pain’s a page; loss is a lesson; next rep answers what the last said
Empty the tank till the tank feels deeper than it did
That’s the difference between wantin’ what he had and what he lived
So when the room is dead quiet and that paper leaves your hand,
For one breath you’re back beneath that frozen driveway lamp
Joy, grief, work, belief, one word carries all of it
Ball leaves your fingertips, the whole world calls it…
One word.
A celebration.
An instruction.
A goodbye.
…Kobe.
Rest in peace, Kobe and Gianna.
